ION Hockey Finals: men’s side Racing victorious after 81 years and second time in a row for women’s side Gantoise

In the spacious and atmospheric surroundings of Louvain-la-Neuve, the 2021-2022 hockey season reached its grand climax: the ION Hockey Finals. In the men’s competition, tensions were running high between Racing and Gantoise. Following an 81-year wait for a national accolade, the Brussels club was finally rewarded. Where the men fell just short, the women were successful in securing the national league title for Gantoise. The East Flanders women’s team demonstrated their superiority twice over the Dragons.

Men: Saturday Gantoise-Racing 2-2 and Sunday Racing-Gantoise 3-2
On Saturday, the players of Gantoise coach Pascal Kina made a quick-fire start in the duel against Racing and took a 2-0 lead following two awarded strokes. On each occasion, the penalties were converted by Dutchman Pepijn Scheen. Gantoise had further chances but a strong Racing goalkeeper, Jeremy Gucassoff, kept his team in the match. In the second half, Cédric Charlier got one back for the Brussels side in the 53rd minute and three minutes before the end of the match, Tanguy Cosyns secured the equaliser at the penalty corner: 2-2 and so everything to play for again on Sunday.

The following day, Gantoise made the best start once more. Arthur de Borrekens secured the opening goal from a cross from Blaise Rogeau. Gantoise came close to a second goal a short time later but Etienne Tynevez saw his strike hit the post. Just before the interval, Racing tied: a hard ball from Victor Wegnez in the circle was deflected by Tanguy Cosyns: 1-1. In the third quarter, Cosyns secured the outcome with his third and fourth goal of the weekend. In the 44th minute, he scored at the penalty corner – Gantoise goalkeeper Tomas Santiago didn’t quite contact the ball well enough – and a short time after he was able to convert a penalty shot after Cédric Charlier was brought down in the circle: 3-1. Following a superb move by Antoine Kina, who supplied the ball up perfectly to Arthur de Borrekens, the last twelve minutes of the encounter proved really thrilling: 3-2. A final offensive by Gantoise, however, produced no further goals. For the first time since 1941, Racing was able to celebrate the national league title!

“All season, we’ve demonstrated our resilience and this was the key to our success,” according to Racing coach Craig Fulton. For Jérôme Truyens and Jeremy Gucassoff, this national league title was very special. Racing is the only club they have ever known and they were finally rewarded after losing several finals.

Women: Saturday Dragons-Gantoise 1-3 and Sunday Gantoise-Dragons 3-0
Up against Gantoise, undefeated for three years already, Dragons aimed to keep a clean sheet for as long as possible but that strategy held up a mere four minutes: in combination with Lara Oviedo, Ambre Ballenghien scored the opening goal on Saturday. Before the interval, Gantoise doubled the score after a very impressive attack. The ball came to Delfina Gaspari via Alix Gerniers, Ambre Ballenghien and Noa Schreurs. She passed goalkeeper Roos Knijff: 2-0. In the 41st minute, Anne-Sophie Roels supplied the ball up to Noa Schreurs. From an acute angle, Schreurs finished it off at height (3-0). Five minutes later, Dragons bagged the goal of hope. After a penalty corner, Manuela Vilar came in possession of the ball and her shot was put into goal by Delphine Mariën. Final score: 3-1.

A day later, Dragons had the first opportunity to score but after a foul by Rocio Emme on Lara Oviedo in the circle, Gantoise were awarded a penalty in the eleventh minute. Ambre Ballenghien brought her team one step closer again to a second national league title in a row: 1-0. Gantoise then went on to dominate the match and had no more problems against the brave Dragons. In the 21st minute, after a penalty corner Gantoise passed the ball round and Alix Gerniers completed: 2-0. In the second half, after a smart effort by 37-year-old Emilie Sinia, Ambre Ballenghien secured the 3-0 final score.

With a second final in a row, Gantoise and Dragons confirmed their status as the two best teams in the league but strongly performing Gantoise are set to pose the number one challenge for the other teams in the upcoming season. Capturing an EHL medal – in April they were unsuccessful – must be the next big goal for Gantoise.

ION Hockey Finals : Victoire du Racing messieurs après 81 ans et de la Gantoise dames pour la deuxième fois consécutive

C’est à Louvain-la-Neuve, dans un cadre spacieux et à l’ambiance survoltée que s’est clôturée en apothéose la saison de hockey 2021-2022 avec les ION Hockey Finals. Chez les messieurs, la tension était à son comble entre le Racing et la Gantoise. Après 81 ans d’attente d’un couronnement national, le club bruxellois a finalement été récompensé. Ce qui n’a pas fonctionné chez les messieurs a en revanche été payant chez les dames ; avec à la clé le titre national pour la Gantoise. Les joueuses de Flandre orientale se sont montrées deux fois supérieures au Dragons.

Messieurs : Gantoise-Racing 2-2 le samedi et Racing-Gantoise 3-2 le dimanche
Les joueurs de l'entraîneur gantois Pascal Kina ont démarré le match de samedi contre le Racing sur les chapeaux de roue et ont mené 2-0 à la pause après deux coups accordés. C’est à chaque fois le Néerlandais, Pepijn Scheen, qui a inscrit les coups de pénalité. La Gantoise n’a pourtant pas manqué d’occasions, mais le gardien de but du Racing, Jeremy Gucassoff, a maintenu son équipe dans le jeu. En seconde période, Cédric Charlier est revenu dans le jeu en inscrivant le but bruxellois à la 53e minute et Tanguy Cosys a égalisé sur un coup de coin de pénalité à trois minutes du coup de sifflet final : 2-2 comme score final, ce qui concrètement signifie que tout est encore à refaire le dimanche.

Un jour plus tard, la Gantoise a une nouvelle fois débuté le match sous les meilleurs auspices. Arthur de Borrekens a marqué le premier but sur un centre de Blaise Rogeau. La Gantoise était toute proche d'un second but quelques minutes plus tard. Malheureusement, le tir d’Étienne Tynevez a heurté le poteau. Juste avant la pause, le Racing a égalisé : une balle puissante de Victor Wegnez dans le cercle a été déviée par Tanguy Cosyns : 1-1. Dans le troisième quart-temps, Cosyns a mis un terme à toute tergiversation possible en marquant son troisième et quatrième but du week-end. À la 44e minute, il a marqué sur un corner de pénalité - le gardien de but gantois, Tomas Santiago, n’est pas parvenu à suffisamment bien intercepter la balle - et quelques instants plus tard, il a pu marquer un coup de coin de pénalité après que Cédric Charlier ait été mis à terre dans le cercle : 3-1. Après une belle action d'Antoine Kina, qui a été plus que bénéfique à Arthur de Borrekens, la tension de la rencontre est remontée d’un cran au cours des douze dernières minutes : 3-2. La Gantoise n’a cependant pas pu tirer parti de la dernière offensive opérée ; aucun but n’ayant été inscrit. Le Racing a pu fêter le titre national pour la première fois depuis 1941 !

« Nous avons fait preuve de résilience tout au long de la saison et ce fut la clé de notre succès », a déclaré l'entraîneur du Racing, Craig Fulton. Ce titre national avait une saveur quelque peu particulière pour Jérôme Truyens et Jeremy Gucassoff. En effet, ils n'ont jamais connu aucun autre club que le Racing et ont finalement été récompensés après plusieurs défaites en finales.

Dames : Dragons-Gantoise 1-3 le samedi et Gantoise-Dragons 3-0 le dimanche
Le Dragons, face à la Gantoise invaincue depuis trois ans déjà, souhaitait maintenir le score à 0 le plus longtemps possible. Malheureusement ce plan n’a duré que quatre minutes à peine : le duo Lara Oviedo et Ambre Ballenghien a ouvert le score samedi. Peu de temps avant la pause, la Gantoise a doublé le score grâce une attaque bien orchestrée. La balle est passée par Alix Gerniers, Ambre Ballenghien et Noa Schreurs avant d’atterrir aux pieds de Delfina Gaspari qui n’a fait qu’une bouchée de la gardienne de but, Roos Knijff : 2-0. À la 41e minute, Anne-Sophie Roels a fait une jolie passe à Noa Schreurs. Schreurs termine le travail en apothéose malgré sa position délicate (3-0). Le Dragons marque le but de l'espoir cinq minutes plus tard. Après un coup de coin de pénalité, la balle est arrivée dans les pieds de Manuela Vilar et Delphine Mariën a dévié son tir qui a terminé sa course directement dans le goal. Score final : 3-1.

Un jour plus tard, le Dragons cherchait à marquer en premier, mais après une faute de Rocio Emme sur Lara Oviedo dans le cercle, la Gantoise s'est vu accorder un coup de pénalité à la 11e minute. Il s’agit de la deuxième fois consécutive qu’Ambre Ballenghien hisse son équipe aussi près d’un second titre national : 1-0. La Gantoise a ensuite dominé le match et n'a jamais plus été mise en difficultés face aux valeureuses Dragons. À la 21e minute, la Gantoise a joué la balle après un coup de coin de pénalité et Alix Gerniers a conclu sur un 2-0. En seconde période, Ambre Ballenghien a porté le score à 3-0 après un bel effort d'Emilie Sinia, 37 ans.

Avec une deuxième finale consécutive remportée, la Gantoise et le Dragons ont confirmé leurs positions de deux meilleures équipes du championnat. Il n’en demeure pas moins que LE grand défi des autres équipes pour la saison à venir sera de surprendre l’imbattable équipe de la Gantoise. Remporter une médaille en EHL - qui s’est malheureusement soldé par un échec en avril dernier - devrait être le prochain grand objectif de la Gantoise.

ION Hockey Finals: heren Racing na 81 jaar en dames Gantoise voor de tweede keer op rij

In het ruime en sfeervolle kader van Louvain-la-Neuve werd het hockeyseizoen 2021-2022 afgesloten met de apotheose: de ION Hockey Finals. Bij de heren was het spanning troef tussen Racing en Gantoise. Uiteindelijk werd de Brusselse club, na 81 jaar wachten op een nationale kroon, beloond. Wat bij de heren net niet lukte, lukte bij de dames wel: de landstitel voor Gantoise. De Oost-Vlaamse meisjes toonden zich twee keer de meerdere van Dragons.

Heren: zaterdag Gantoise-Racing 2-2 en zondag Racing-Gantoise 3-2
De spelers van Gantoise-coach Pascal Kina begonnen zaterdag in sneltreinvaart aan het duel tegen Racing en gingen, na twee toegekende strokes, met een 2-0-voorsprong rusten. De strafballen werden telkens omgezet door de Nederlander Pepijn Scheen. Gantoise kreeg nog kansen, maar een sterke Racing-keeper Jeremy Gucassoff hield zijn team in de wedstrijd. In de tweede helft zorgde Cédric Charlier in de 53ste minuut voor de Brusselse aansluitingstreffer en drie minuten voor het eindsignaal lukte Tanguy Cosys op strafcorner de gelijkmaker: 2-2 en dus alles te herdoen op zondag.

Een dag later begon Gantoise opnieuw het beste aan de wedstrijd. Op voorzet van Blaise Rogeau lukte Arthur de Borrekens de openingsgoal. Even later kwam Gantoise dicht bij een tweede treffer, maar Etienne Tynevez zag zijn schot tegen de paal belanden. Net voor de pauze kwam Racing langszij: een harde bal van Victor Wegnez in de cirkel werd door Tanguy Cosyns gedevieerd: 1-1. In kwart drie zorgde Cosyns met zijn derde en vierde doelpunt van het weekend voor de beslissing. In de 44ste minuut scoorde hij op strafcorner – de bal werd net niet goed genoeg aangeraakt door Gantoise-keeper Tomas Santiago – en even later mocht hij een strafbal omzetten nadat Cédric Charlier in de cirkel werd neergehaald: 3-1. Na een geweldige actie van Antoine Kina, die Arthur de Borrekens perfect bediende, kwam er in de laatste twaalf minuten weer heel veel spanning in de ontmoeting: 3-2. Een slotoffensief van Gantoise leverde echter geen doelpunt meer op. Voor het eerst sedert 1941 mocht Racing de landstitel vieren!

“We hebben ons een gans seizoen weerbaar getoond en dat was de sleutel tot ons succes”, aldus Racing-coach Craig Fulton. Voor Jérôme Truyens en Jeremy Gucassoff was deze landstitel wel heel speciaal. Zij kenden nooit een andere club dan Racing en werden na enkele verloren finales eindelijk beloond.

Dames: zaterdag Dragons-Gantoise 1-3 en zondag Gantoise-Dragons 3-0
Tegen het reeds drie jaar ongeslagen Gantoise wou Dragons zo lang mogelijk de nul houden, maar dat plannetje hield slechts vier minuten stand: in combinatie met Lara Oviedo scoorde Ambre Ballenghien zaterdag de openingsgoal. Nog voor de pauze verdubbelde Gantoise, na een zeer knappe aanval, de score. Via Alix Gerniers, Ambre Ballenghien en Noa Schreurs kwam de bal bij Delfina Gaspari. Zij passeerde doelvrouw Roos Knijff: 2-0. In de 41ste minuut werd Noa Schreurs bediend door Anne-Sophie Roels. Vanuit een scherpe hoek werkte Schreurs hoog af (3-0). Vijf minuten later lukte Dragons het doelpunt van de hoop. Na een strafcorner kwam de bal bij Manuela Vilar en haar schot werd door Delphine Mariën in doel gewerkt. Eindstand: 3-1.

Een dag later kwam het er voor Dragons op aan om als eerste te scoren, maar na een fout van Rocio Emme op Lara Oviedo in de cirkel kreeg Gantoise in de elfde minuut een strafbal. Ambre Ballenghien bracht haar team alweer een stukje dichter bij een tweede landstitel op rij: 1-0. Gantoise domineerde vervolgens de wedstrijd en kwam nooit meer in problemen tegen het moedige Dragons. In de 21ste minuut speelde Gantoise na strafcorner de bal rond en Alix Gerniers rondde af: 2-0. In de tweede helft zorgde Ambre Ballenghien na een knappe inspanning van de 37-jarige Emilie Sinia voor de 3-0-eindstand.

Met een tweede finale op rij bevestigden Gantoise en Dragons dat ze de twee beste teams van het kampioenschap vormen, maar het ijzersterke Gantoise verrassen wordt ook het komende seizoen voor de andere ploegen dé grote uitdaging. Een EHL-medaille veroveren – in april lukte dat net niet – moet voor Gantoise het volgende grote doel worden.
