The launch of the ION Hockey League: “Quite an ambitious move, after all there is great unity between the THL and ION”

In February, Gantoise’s new site was the setting for the launch of the ION Hockey League. The highly ambitious partnership between the Top Hockey League and Belgian property developer and property investor ION will result in further professional development of club level hockey within our country. The ultimate goal: to become the world’s most prestigious hockey league.

What the Jupiler Pro League is for football, the ION Hockey League is now for hockey. The Top Hockey League (THL), the association of men’s and women's clubs in the Belgian Honour Division, and ION will signify a new chapter in domestic club level hockey, until at least June 2024. The THL already enjoys an extensive partnership with various TV channels but gained a true ‘title partner’ for the first time. A partnership which is set to give the Belgian hockey league a serious boost in many different areas. The ION Hockey League comprises the ION Men’s League and the Belfius Women’s League. The ION Hockey Finals are, of course, the absolute highlight at the end of the season.

Cédric Deleuze, chairman, and Michel Schuermans, director of the THL, are more than happy to be able to further roll out their strategy with a lead sponsor of this calibre. “This partnership is crucial for the further development of the THL,” we're told. “In the past we have brought structure to our leagues and built bridges between the clubs and the Royal Belgian Hockey Association. We can now undergo further professional development. In our leagues, the best male and female players, staff members and umpires need to be brought together in state-of-the-art facilities. We’re now also in a position to develop new business. So, first and foremost, we’re thinking about enhancing our digital footprint to include a new website and a joint streaming platform.”

Kristof Vanfleteren and Davy Demuynck, ION's CEOs, discern a striking harmony between the sport of hockey and the values their company upholds. “Hockey is a fair sport with a strong focus on respect and sportsmanship and it is a genuine family sport. For that matter, just like the THL, we also want to be ‘Best in Class’ with our company. Brand recognition which the title sponsorship generates will help us to shine the spotlight even more effectively on our company. For instance, amongst other things, we will be introducing the ‘ION Player Of The Match’ during the TV fixtures. It is clear: like our own company, the sport of hockey is growing domestically and internationally. Our outright aim is to pass on the passion for this sport.”

The first major engagement is already coming up with the ION Hockey Finals on 7 and 8 May in Louvain-la-Neuve. We will find out who will be appearing there once the semi-finals have been completed on 30 April and 1 May.

Le nouveau site de la Gantoise a servi de décor au lancement de la ION Hockey League au mois de février. La collaboration très ambitieuse entre la Top Hockey League et le promoteur immobilier et investisseur immobilier belge ION permettra de poursuivre la professionnalisation du hockey de club dans notre pays. L'objectif ultime : devenir la meilleure et la plus importante compétition de hockey au monde.

Ce que la Jupiler Pro League est au football, la ION Hockey League l'est au hockey. La Top Hockey League (THL), l'association qui regroupe les clubs masculins et féminins de la division d’honneur belge, et ION écriront ensemble un nouveau chapitre du hockey de club national jusqu'en juin 2024 au moins. Après un large partenariat avec diverses chaînes de télévision, la THL obtient pour la première fois un véritable « title partner » (partenaire titre). Une collaboration qui donnera un solide coup de pouce à la compétition de hockey belge dans de nombreux domaines. La ION Hockey League comprend la ION Men's League et la Belfius Women's League. Les ION Hockey Finals constituent bien sûr le point culminant de la fin de la saison.

Cédric Deleuze, président, et Michel Schuermans, administrateur de la THL, sont plus que satisfaits de pouvoir continuer à déployer leur stratégie avec un sponsor principal de cette envergure. « Cette collaboration est vitale pour la poursuite du développement de la THL », ajoutent-ils. « Nous avions par le passé insufflé une certaine structure à nos compétitions et jeté des ponts entre les clubs et c. Nous pouvons à présent continuer à nous professionnaliser. Nos compétitions seront l’occasion de réunir les meilleurs joueurs, joueuses, membres de staff et arbitres dans des installations dernier cri. Nous sommes désormais également en mesure de développer de nouvelles choses. Nous envisageons tout d’abord d'accroître notre empreinte numérique avec un nouveau site Web et une plateforme de streaming commune. »

Kristof Vanfleteren et Davy Demuynck, les CEO d'ION, perçoivent une harmonie évidente entre le sport du hockey et les valeurs auxquelles leur entreprise croit. « Le hockey est un sport loyal où l'on accorde beaucoup d'attention au respect et au fair-play et puis il s’agit d’un vrai sport familial. Tout comme la THL, nous souhaitons également que notre entreprise soit “la meilleure de sa classe“. La notoriété de la marque générée par le sponsoring titre nous aidera à attirer encore plus l’attention sur notre entreprise. Nous introduirons par exemple le « ION Player of the Match » pendant les matchs diffusés à la TV. Il ne fait plus l’ombre d'un doute : à l’instar de notre entreprise, le sport du hockey est en plein essor au niveau national et international. Notre objectif absolu étant de transmettre la passion de ce sport ».

Le premier grand rendez-vous arrive bientôt avec les ION Hockey Finals les 7 et 8 mai à Louvain-la-Neuve. Nous saurons qui y concourra à l’issue des demi-finales qui se tiendront les 30 avril et 1er mai.

De zeer ambitieuze samenwerking tussen de Top Hockey League en de Belgische projectontwikkelaar en vastgoedinvesteerder ION zal voor een verdere professionalisering van het clubhockey in ons land zorgen. Het uiteindelijke doel: uitgroeien tot de meest vooraanstaande hockeycompetitie ter wereld.

Wat de Jupiler Pro League is voor het voetbal, is nu de ION Hockey League voor het hockey. De Top Hockey League (THL), de vereniging van de mannen- en vrouwenclubs in de Belgische Eredivisie, en ION zullen tot minstens juni 2024 een nieuw hoofdstuk schrijven in het nationale clubhockey. De THL heeft reeds een ruim partnership met diverse tv-zenders, maar kreeg nu voor het eerst een echte ‘title partner’. Een samenwerking die de Belgische hockeycompetitie op heel wat domeinen een stevige boost zal geven. De ION Hockey League omvat de ION Men’s League en de Belfius Women’s League. Aan het einde van het seizoen vormen de ION Hockey Finals vanzelfsprekend het absolute hoogtepunt.

Nu kunnen we verder professionaliseren. In onze competities moeten de beste spelers, speelsters, stafleden én scheidsrechters samengebracht worden in de modernste faciliteiten. We zijn nu ook in staat om nieuwe zaken te ontwikkelen. In de eerste plaats denken we dan aan het vergroten van onze digitale footprint met een nieuwe website en een gemeenschappelijk streaming platform.”

Zo introduceren we onder meer tijdens de TV-wedstrijden de ‘ION man van de match’. Het is duidelijk: net als ons bedrijf groeit de hockeysport op nationaal en internationaal vlak. Het is ons absoluut doel om de passie voor deze sport door te geven.”

De eerste grote afspraak komt er binnenkort al aan met de ION Hockey Finals op 7 en 8 mei in Louvain-la-Neuve. Wie daar zal aantreden weten we na afloop van de halve finales, die op 30 april en 1 mei worden afgewerkt.
